"We thank God for giving us every good thing."
Psalm 136:1
We'll read the story of The Ten Lepers and learn the importance of saying thank you. We'll thank God for all the gifts that he has given us.
Our reading selection is Little Panda, an informational. We'll compare/contrast little panda and his mom and discuss changes that occur as we grow. We'll work on initial and final /b/ and /n/ and name the verbs in class pictures. High Frequency words: me, with, she; -ig Word Family: big, dig, fig, jig, rig, wig.
We'll continue to read fiction/non-fiction books about bears and use a Venn diagram to compare different versions of The Three Bears. We'll vote for our favorite character in the story. There will be a teddy bear sleepover on Thursday and a teddy bear picnic on Friday. An invitation will be sent home on Thursday in your child's folder. We'll use shortening as "blubber" to see why bears don't get cold.
We've been reading many books and poems about snow and learning about the colder regions in the world. The Gingerbread Babies have been arriving every day and there is such excitement. We've enjoyed locating their destination on the map and reading the postcards. There will be a display on the bulletin board later in the week. Be sure to check it out. Several have not made it back to school. Did you mail yours?
Nineteen children participated in the December Read Aloud with a total of 316 books read, a drop from November. Total to date: 1,175.
We'll work on symmetry and the concept of half. We'll identify shapes that have equal parts and munch on snacks to show "fair shares". On the 90th day of school we'll celebrate "Half and Half" Day. Info will be sent home.
We'll hear stories about Ruby Bridges, Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We'll make hands of friendship booklets: peace, love, friends.
Our Community Service Project this month is a "Souper Bowl". We'll be collecting canned soup to donate to a local food pantry. We'll look at Andy Warhol's well known print of Campbell's soup. We'll count, roll, and stack the cans. Donations will be accepted through Friday, January 21st. Many thanks!
